Media Release: Witherswood Offers Progeny Of Australia’s Most Expensive Angus Bull & First Ever Female Sale
Open Day for inspections this Friday, 13th October
Witherswood Angus, based in Taminick (via Glenrowan) in the Warby Ranges and home to Australia’s most expensive Angus bull is having their first ever female sale on 20th October 2017, at 1pm on site.
Witherswood Angus is the home of Australia’s most expensive Angus bull, Kingdom K35, who was purchased by Witherswood as part of a consortium for $150,000 in September 2015. Kingdom has recently returned home after a stint in collection for ten months, where he achieved the largest semen sales of an Australian Angus Bull.
Witherswood are offering a selection of top quality females in this sale, many with calves by leading industry sires, including Kingdom K35 and Klooney K42. Also on sale are yearling heifers and yearling bulls by both of the prized bulls.
This will be the first opportunity for the public to buy into the female side of Witherswood’s impeccable breeding program.
After many years of breeding, Witherswood’s accelerated embryo programmes have increased their numbers, and this enables them to share their quality genetics with other breeders. A critical assessment of Witherswood’s herd has been taken each year. Their focus has always been on fertility, structure, temperament, longevity, and the ability for cows to raise a top quality calf every year.
Kingdom K35 and Klooney K42 have been pivotal in Witherswood’s program, and they are the first Victorian stud to offer their progeny for sale. The recent Millah Murrah sale in New South Wales saw yearling sons of Kingdom K35 sell up to $20,000, and Klooney K42 sell to $50,000, which is a new record for a yearling bull.
On the sale of some of Kingdom K35 progeny, Witherswood owner John Woodruff said:
”At Witherswood, we have worked extremely hard to breed our unique type of cattle, and have not been heavily influenced by the race to EBV figures, which are easy to produce, and great to market.
“Instead, we are focused on the ability to produce cows with the correct structure, fertility, longevity, and good milk production, qualities which are most important to a sound, long term beef operation.”
As reported in The Age on 21st June 2015, “Cattle prices have hit a record high as surging international demand for Australian beef combines with drought – at home and abroad – to push up prices.”
The consistent top quality of Witherswood Angus bulls will help to keep Australian cattle prices at the top of the competitive market.
In commenting on the sale, Ian Peake, Stud Manager at Witherswood said:
“I always find it hard to sell females because a lot of hours go in to producing productive females and you expect them to be around for the next ten years, but we can’t keep them all.”
The sale will be held on 20th October 2017, at 1pm at the Witherswood Farm, 1185 Glenrowan Boweya Road, Taminick via Glenrowan.
